Studying dental medicine without numerus clausus
Dentists are faced with lots of challenges in their daily work to ensure that their patients keep that gleaming smile – such as prophylactics, professional tooth cleaning, taking x-rays, drilling, or root canal treatments. Subject to approval by the regional government, the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) will be the first in the State of Brandenburg to offer a state-recognized course in dental medicine starting with the summer term 2024. Our individualized admission procedures - without numerus clausus restrictions – place greater emphasis on character, motivation and work experience than on school-leaving grades. The Brandenburg Model Curriculum Dental Medicine comprises preclinical and clinical training with a close integration of theoretical basics and practical application in a ten-semester course.
The course in dental medicine is currently awaiting approval by the pertinent Brandenburg ministries.
The modular curriculum has a strong practice- and patient orientation right from the start. Theoretical contents are taught with close reference to application in practice.
The focus in the first stage (semesters 1 bis 6) is on basic functions of the human body, systemic and oral diseases and the fundamental methods of dental treatment. The curriculum contains four elements of practical instruction at this early stage: a practice unit of human medicine for second-semester students, and further units in dental surgeries in semesters 3 and 6. In the fourth semester the focus is on work in dental labs. A scientific internship is scheduled for the 5th semester; in this context students work on their first scientific treatise, which is an ideal potential basis for a subsequent doctorate (Dr. med. dent.).
Apart from advanced theoretical instruction, the second stage (semesters 7 to 10) primarily consists in practical training for prospective dentists and takes place in the MHB dental clinic. Supervised by experienced dentists, our students start treating patients of their own and progress from routine interventions to more complex cases. The overriding objective remains to school our students in such a way that they are well prepared for work in a dental practice from day one after their final examination. In addition to their professional and technical qualification they need basic competences in business administration and organization which they acquire in a separate module on “Practice Management”. The second stage concludes with the third part of the state examination in dental medicine; successful graduates may apply for the license to practice dental medicine.
If you opt for the Brandenburg Model Curriculum in Dental Medicine at the MHB, you will profit immediately from the established structures and experience won with the medical curriculum. Our students enjoy modern and innovative formats of instruction in a model curriculum at a high level of didactic quality. They experience the highest standards of university-taught (dental) medicine in close exchange with scientists engaged in basic research, medicine and psychology. The overriding concept behind all this is a holistic approach to health, or, in the case of dental medicine studies at the MHB: we are concerned not with the individual tooth but with the whole person.
