Integrated Working Group “Patient Centeredness and Health Competence”
This Integrated Working Group pursues scientific projects with the aim to support the MHB research focus on “patient-centered healthcare for an ageing population in a non-city state” and offer scope for exchange between science and the practice of care. The background is the specific situation in the federal state where the MHB is located: approximately one quarter of Brandenburg’s population are 65 years old and above (source: Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office. “Ergebnisse des Mikrozensus im Land Brandenburg 2021 – Bevölkerung, Erwerbstätigkeit, Haushalte, Familien, Lebensformen“, Potsdam, 2022). One result of this ageing is an increasing incidence of chronic diseases and therefore more intensive contacts with actors in the healthcare system. The percentage of care-dependent people in inpatient settings rises with age and the level of care requirements. The percentage of care-dependent people in Brandenburg is higher than in all other states in Germany for all age groups (source: Brandenburg Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Integration and Consumer Protection. “Daten und Fakten zur Pflege im Land Brandenburg: Analyse der Pflegestatistik 2019“, Potsdam, 2021).
Patient centeredness is therefore the order of the day. The IAG is concerned with questions such as: Which models and concepts are needed to develop a viable patient-centered health system? Which requirements must concepts meet to create a health system geared to benefit for patients? In this context it is of increasing and pressing importance to strengthen health competences in the general population. The IAG addresses this need with an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists from various disciplines, students and postgraduates.
Founded in 2019, the working groups has regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. The minutes of these meetings and a comprehensive profile of the IAG are available to MHB staff in Moodle.
