Institute of General Medicine
"...specialised in the whole person!"
General practice is the primary care of the population in all health matters, whether physical or mental, acute or chronic. It also includes health promotion and prevention, as well as protection against underuse and overuse.
General practitioners are usually the first point of contact in the healthcare system. They can solve many problems directly in the practice and also act as a guide to coordinate care with specialists in hospitals and practices. Typically, they provide long-term care and support over many years - "from the cradle to the grave" (freely adapted on Herrmann Hesse). Statistically, a doctor-patient relationship in general practice lasts longer than the average marriage! The focus is not only on health, but also on the professional, family, cultural and other aspects of the patient - the whole person!
The Institute of General Practice at the MHB sees itself as a bridge between teaching, research and practice for primary care in the state of Brandenburg. In close cooperation with colleagues in private practice, students at the MHB are taught practical skills, a comprehensive understanding and, above all, enthusiasm for our subject - from the very first stage of their studies. Together with the MHB's network of research practices, practical issues can be scientifically analysed and new scientific findings can be tested in everyday care.
Brandenburg Competence Centre for Advanced Training in General Practice
The new "Kompetenzzentrum KW-BB" was founded in 2023 to establish a structured and participant-oriented system of high-quality advanced training in general medicine, with the long-term objective of securing and improving general practice in Brandenburg.
Cooperation partners under the umbrella of the centre are the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB), the State Chamber of Physicians, the State Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians and the Brandenburg Hospital Association. Their objective: to promote the quality and efficiency of specialist training in general practice and to support young doctors in preparing for a career in general practice.
Targeted support for GP residency training in inpatient and outpatient settings takes the form of a curriculum-based seminar programme and mentoring schemes. Trainers benefit from train-the-trainer seminars and mentor training.
Advanced training for instructors provides new impetus, promotes exchange and improves their performance as teachers. Our tasks and objectives:
- Smooth transition from studies to specialist training in general practice
- Programme for doctors in specialist training, consisting of a seminar and monitoring programme
- Train-the-trainer programme for training personnel
- Mentor training
- Instructor training for seminar hosts
- Advice and support in all matters relating to advanced training
- Continuous evaluation and systematic quality improvement of advanced training in general practice in the State of Brandenburg.“
