Institute of Biostatistics and Registry Research
The Institute of Biostatistics and Registry Research develops methodological and statistical approaches and applies them to medical data to understand the causes, prevention and treatment of diseases. The institute's research focuses on 4 topics:
- De-escalation of medical care: We investigate the safe reduction of side effects and complications and the resulting improvement of quality of life through less and less intensive therapy and diagnostics in oncology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, palliative medicine and geriatric care.
- Healthy aging: We perform research into the causes and solutions for health problems in old age such as hearing loss, dementia, stroke and heart disease.
- Radiation research: We quantify the health risks of exposure to ionizing radiation in the context of CT diagnostics and radiotherapy.
- Registry research: We identify ways to generate robust clinical evidence from registry data, using data from oncology, ultrasound diagnostics and hearing loss.
The institute's employees have expertise in the design and evaluation of clinical observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). They develop, expand and use statistical methods from the following areas within the 4 subject areas:
- Design and analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Analysis of observational data / correction of confounding
- Analysis of spatial data
- Risk prediction
- Modeling of radiation risks
