Institute of Physiology
Physiology explores the function of vital processes. It integrates findings from the molecular and cellular level of life functions up to the levels of organ systems and the human organism.
In collaboration with partners at the Brandenburg Medical School, the Institute of Physiology conveys basic scientific knowledge to students of medicine in the context of a modular curriculum. Great emphasis is placed on early cross-references between knowledge about the physiology of the human organism and course contents from clinical subjects.
A key research interest at the Institute of Physiology is the function of blood vessels. We explore mechanisms of regulating the tone of vessel musculature via hormonal and neuronal factors and of signal processing within vascular muscles. One important aspect of these research activities is an improved understanding of age-related changes in vascular function.
