Better health service provision

This talks series on current topics of health services research started last semester with success (location: Potsdam, Haus der Ärzteschaft) and has now resumed. MHB Dean Prof. Dr. Edmund A. Neugebauer initiated the series and is pleased to again have won a number of renowned experts as lecturers and for discussion on current concepts, methods and studies in the field. He will himself contribute a lecture on current state and perspectives of the Innovation Fund scheduled for 17 January 2018.

Neugebauer describes the series as a shared platform for members and affiliates of MHB and an interested public to exchange ideas and information on issues and aspects of health services research as a still young discipline which nevertheless forms the backbone of scientific activities at MHB and contributes to its sense of identity. Studies based on the methodology used in the field will help to achieve the targets stipulated for the Brandenburg Health Campus. As the only medical school in Brandenburg, MHB perceives itself as driving force and impulse generator, so Neugebauer.

The new series commenced with two lectures on register research on 18 October. Dr. med. Monika Klinkhammer-Schalke (Institute of Quality Control and Health Services Research / Regensburg University) addressed requirements of and preliminary findings from health services research with register data. Dr. rer. medic. Annett Tillack described the impact and potentials of the Clinical Cancer Register Brandenburg and Berlin which she directs.

Both lecturers agreed on the importance of neutral and independent data collection to record entire patient histories, and of using the data material in research for the benefit of physicians and patients alike. Registers, so Klinkhammer-Schalke must be living organisms, and good collaboration between registers and physicians is a crucial success factor.

Dr. Tillack described the considerable obstacles she had and still has to overcome on the way to an efficient cancer register, due to bureaucratic regulations and data privacy requirements but also to the complexity of structures to be created. The register she is in charge of comprises two federal states, Berlin and Brandenburg, and started operations anew with a revised structure in January 2016.

The regional medical association LÄKB has certified the talks series on health services research as a training event with three points for attendance.
