Speed dating helps to find hospital of choice. Matchmaking event for students and clinics.

32 loans with a total volume of over € 2.5 million await the new medical students.

Neuruppin, 22 February 2018

The hospital network Ruppiner Kliniken again hosted the so called Marketplace of Clinics in their ceremonial hall on 21 February 2018. MHB dean Prof. Dr. Edmund Neugebauer welcomed the new students and thanked the cooperating hospitals for their valuable support and contribution to the training of future physicians.

The format is unique in Germany according to Dagmar Maske, coordinator of the student affairs section: “The setting, not unlike speed dating, facilitates first personal encounters between first-year medical students and representatives of our cooperating clinics.”

The first introductory stage is followed by several lottery-style rounds where candidates can try to secure a training place at the hospital of their choice. All available grants and places are allocated after three rounds. Luck and the right strategy are what counts.

Medical directors, hospital managers, personnel officers and physicians from 13 cooperating clinics met the newcomers who will start their medical studies in April. A special feature is that the hospitals are not only involved in teaching and research, but assume part of tuition fees, i.e. € 80,000 per student. In return students commit themselves to complete their 5-year specialist training at a specific hospital after graduation. 32 loans will be granted this year.

Maske thinks it is splendid to get the option of an 80,000 € grant and secure a place for specialisation at an early time: “Being bound to a particular hospital is by no means a negative aspect. The concept supports job guarantees, long-term planning reliability and excellent career opportunities.”

She reported a general atmosphere of satisfaction at this year’s matchmaking event, even tears of joy and relief from some candidates: “This is a highly unusual but wonderful format.”
