Construction of the human body
Street Art meets medicine: Nychos visits MHB anatomy institute
Neuruppin, 22 September 2025
Street artist Nychos of international renown followed an invitation to the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB)/Neuruppin in August where he created the mural “The Dissection of Theodor Fontane”. The Austrian who lives in Los Angeles also visited the MHB Institute of Anatomy. He was highly pleased to acquire more in-depth knowledge of the human body with the help of Prof. Andreas Winkelmann (head of the institute) and lecturer Dr. Silke Storsberg. He described the experience as the highlight of his time in Neuruppin.
His characteristic style is the presentation of animals, figures and icons of pop culture in sections or X-ray vision. Marked by his background of a traditional family of hunters, he developed an early interest in the construction of the body. The MHB now offered him an opportunity to combine this fascination with scientific precision.
Anatomy studies have a marked effect on MHB medical students as well. Starting with the very first semester, the Institute of Anatomy conveys the fundamentals for later medical activities. They comprise seminars, practical periods of microscopy with histological specimens, macroscopic work on specimens derived from the human body, and opportunities to practice dissection. Students gain a better understanding of the human body and its complexities and get a feel for various tissues and physical individualities.
Working with human specimens constitutes intensive training in fine motor skills and an exercise in self-efficacy and responsibility. Students make their own discoveries of body, tissue and organs; they follow the process of histological preparation and address a range of existential issues involved in anatomy which form integral parts of instruction at the MHB, such as death, dying, ageing and the concept of body donations. A working group of students organizes tutorials in support of these courses and in preparation for exams.
The works of Nychos steer our gaze towards the interior; in the same way, anatomy offers MHB students deeper insights for a better understanding of humans.
