Senate statement on federal state funding
Neuruppin, 16 January 2024
The Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. In this short time the university has become an important pillar of healthcare provision in the State of Brandenburg through the education of urgently required experts in medicine and psychotherapy. About two thirds of medical graduates stay in the region, and over 50 physicians trained at the MHB are already active at hospitals in Brandenburg. In addition, a course in dental medicine is scheduled to start in Brandenburg/Havel with the summer term of 2024, which will certainly improve the provision of dental care. With the training of physicians and psychotherapists and considerable commitment the MHB plays an important role in the provision of healthcare in Brandenburg and helps to maintain the economic viability of the region. Every single case of sick leave due to insufficient treatment of medical or mental disorders means not only personal suffering but also damage to the national economy.
The MHB as a non-profit institution under municipal sponsorship has developed into a relevant economic factor in Brandenburg with an annual budget of currently about € 30 million and makes important contributions to public service provision and positive developments in the federal state on a continuous basis.
In view of the upcoming regional elections scheduled for September, the MHB invites politicians to chart the political course for successful developments in student education, research and care provision and to support continued funding for the MHB beyond 2024. The aim is to carry the MHB success story (“from the region, for the region”) forward into the next legislative term.
Here is the MHB senate’s detailed statement (in German) on how to ensure healthcare provision in the State of Brandenburg.
