Science Council completes two-day on-site inspection of Brandenburg Medical School

Neuruppin, 22 March 2024
The Science Council completed a two-day inspection of the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) for the initial accreditation on Thursday, 21 March. It will take months before the outcome is announced but MHB president Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon believes the two days have been successful: “Many dedicated individuals have been involved in intensive, highly professional preparation, and the presentation of the MHB on both days in Neuruppin and Brandenburg. We are confident that the numerous small and large success stories that document our joint efforts have made a convincing case.”
The Science Council conducts accreditation procedures of non-governmental higher education institutions on behalf of the federal states, acting as a certification agency for universities. Procedures serve as quality assurance and comprise an in-depth evaluation to ensure that performance in research and student education meets the established academic standards.
MHB chancellor Dr. Gerrit Fleige looks forward to the assessment results with great interest and hopes for valuable suggestions for further development: “We are currently expecting a generally positive feedback from the Science Council, and at the same time anticipate some recommendations and conditions – an expectable result in view of the comparably short history of our university. We have already learned a great deal for future reaccreditation and are certainly motivated to make continuous progress.”
Prof. Markus Deckert, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, points out that the accreditation procedure had originally been scheduled to take place five years earlier. His personal impression of the on-site inspection was a very pleasant tour with plausible questions in a cooperative and favorable atmosphere.
State accreditation for the MHB is valid up to the end of March 2026. As early as 2022, the State of Brandenburg had filed an application for the institutional accreditation of the MHB by the Science Council in the course of 2024. Procedures had to be postponed by at least six months, and the Brandenburg government decided to extend state recognition up to termination of accreditation procedures. The Science Council is scheduled to decide on accreditation for the MHB on 25 October 2024.
