Sana Kliniken Sommerfeld organised second Summer School

Two groups of nine students respectively from the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) visited the Sana Kliniken Sommerfeld for a week and gained insights into surgical and conservative orthopaedics.
Even in times of master plans and model curricula it can still happen that medical students have not enough opportunity to try out in practice what they have been taught. The second Summer School at the Sana Kliniken Sommerfeld again demonstrated that MHB curricula are different. Students gained valuable first-hand experience in fields such as endoprosthetics, spinal and foot surgery, conservative orthopaedics, pain medicine and orthopaedic rehabilitation.
Headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Halder, the Sana Kliniken Sommerfeld specialise in artificial joints. With a total of more than 2,800 joint replacement surgeries they are among German’s leading orthopaedic hospitals. The clinic of manual medicine alone treats over 3,400 patients every year, with a focus on the complex diagnostics and treatment of disorders of the locomotor system, specifically back and joint pains. The facility also includes a clinic of surgical orthopaedics and a rehabilitation clinic and thus offers acute medical treatment and rehabilitative medicine under one roof.
Supervised by managing senior physician Dr. Daniel Schrednitzki, the students enjoyed a highly informative and stimulating programme in and outside operating theatres, in suture courses, monitored patient examinations, doctor’s rounds and epicrisis for training purposes. David Boten (1st semester) spoke for all participating students when he praised the dedication of all clinic staff involved in the event.
The evenings offered ample leisure time for personal exchange with doctors at the facility and detailed questions on job and career.
Feedback was positive throughout, and the next Sana Summer School has already been scheduled for 2018.
