Place of honour for “Papa Fleischer”
Neuruppin, 21 August 2020
MHB (Brandenburg Medical School) students, staff and management attended a ceremony in the senate hall last Wednesday to celebrate the 80th birthday of Prof. Dr. Günter Fleischer and award him a place of honour.
In his birthday speech MHB president Prof. Edmund Neugebauer praised Prof. Fleischer for his long-standing personal commitment in chairing the board of the MHB sponsors association: “You have made a decisive impact on the association over the past four years, supported many students in their projects and initiatives, provided financial assistance in emergencies, and given continuous backing to developments at the MHB in general.”
An avid endurance athlete, Prof. Fleischer took charge of the MHB sponsors association in 2016. He initiated and organised trips to Guben and Luckau in a van – the “MHB-Mobil” – as opportunities for medical students to get acquainted with rural Brandenburg and overcome potentially existing prejudices regarding work as a country doctor.
Prof. Neugebauer described the two excursions as highly successful: “You have helped to build important connections and relationships and supported our efforts to keep our graduates in the region. Our students call you ‘Papa Fleischer’ in affectionate appreciation of your special status in the MHB family.” He proceeded to hand over a certificate and unveil a plaque on the back of a chair to mark the occasion.
Prof. Fleischer will be permanently honoured with a place on the MHB Wall of Fame and was invited to choose a free wall tile.
Prof. Fleischer showed himself deeply moved and overwhelmed with the ceremony which came as a surprise to him. He thanked all those present for their time, their good wishes and gifts. He was particularly grateful to receive an honorary seat in the senate hall and a space on the MHB Wall of Fame. He underlined his strong motivation to support the MHB and its students, and said he was looking forward to continuing the excellent collaboration.
