New Skills and Simulation Center: Education and training for health professionals
Neuruppin, 25 February 2026
The Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) expands the range of options for education and advanced training in collaboration with the university hospitals: the Brandenburg Interdisciplinary Skills and Simulation Center (BiSS) is a newly created training facility where clinical and pre-clinical emergencies are simulated in lifelike scenarios without risks for patients.
The BiSS offers up-to-date training environments for specialist personnel from medicine, nursing, rescue services and other health professions. Simulation-based course formats serve to school participants in medical procedures, teamwork and communication in time-critical situations. Simulators are used to represent adults, children or newborns and respond dynamically to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
Mareike Körber, MHB professor of anesthesiology and intensive medicine, underlines the importance of such preemptive exercises, since many medical emergencies are rare incidents, and a structured and organized approach is essential for safety and outcome: “It is a huge benefit for reliable healthcare supply in the region that these courses are now open to external physicians and entire practice and clinic teams as well.”
As a recognized training site of the American Heart Association (AHA), the Center offers internationally standardized courses such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Course contents convey guideline-based interventions in acute cardiovascular emergencies, for reanimation and post reanimation treatment. Upon successful completion participants receive an internationally recognized AHA certificate.
The BiSS also offers complex interprofessional simulation training units, e.g. for anesthesiology and obstetrical care. The focus is on the interaction of various professional groups in highly dynamic situations, e.g. emergency cesarean section or post-partum bleeding, and apart from subject-related content, on human factors, communication, definition of roles and decision making in line with Crew Resource Management (CRM).
In addition, the BiSS offers emergency training for medical and dental outpatient surgeries, with exercises in preparation for typical emergencies from daily practice – either at the Center or in the form of in-house training on site. These formats are adapted to the respective surgery, existing equipment and work routines.
According to Jannis Schwanemann, who is in charge of medical management at the BiSS, the Center fills the gap between studies and professional practice and supports students from SkillsLab and career start to continuous further education in their professional lives.
In this manner the BiSS provides a valuable link between studies and professional practice pursuant to the principle of lifelong learning. All course formats undergo constant evaluation, scientific supervision and further development. The plan is to expand the range of courses step by step, from training to further and continued education.
The new facility strengthens the role of the MHB as a practice-oriented institution of training and further education in healthcare in the State of Brandenburg and beyond.
