The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe made a fundamental ruling yesterday: The allocation of study places in medicine at state universities must follow different rules in future. Apart from school-leaving grades, other criteria must be taken into account as well, such as previously acquired medicine-related vocational qualifications, empathy in dealing with patients, or communicative competences.
Many of the criteria mentioned in this context and demanded for the future are already part of selection procedures at the MHB. Prior to the court ruling, a ZDF TV crew accompanied MHB medical student Maximilian Fichtl; they describe specific aspects of the Brandenburg medical model curriculum and of selection procedures at the MHB where the focus is less on school-leaving grades than on motivation, communicative skills and personality. The elaborate multi-step procedure aims to identify not only good students but individuals with the potential to become good physicians.
