MUL-CT and MHB join forces to fight shortage of physicians

The Medical University Lausitz - Carl Thiem (MUL-CT) and the Brandenburg Medical School CAMPUS GmbH (MHB) have entered into a comprehensive cooperation agreement with the aim of training more physicians for Brandenburg, keeping young doctors in the region and developing innovative solutions in healthcare.

The agreement covers research, student education, digitization and support for young physicians. The underlying common purpose: long-term protection and advancement of healthcare provision in Brandenburg. According to Prof. Dr. Adelheid Kuhlmey, Scientific Founding Director of the MUL-CT, Brandenburg needs well-trained physicians, innovative research and strong regional networks: “No institution can tackle this challenge alone. The MHB as a partner will enable us to interlock medical education with research and healthcare more closely.”

Both institutions plan better coordination of course contents and joint use of existing training structures. Teaching surgeries and teaching hospitals are to accept students of both universities and thus offer practical experience to more prospective physicians in Brandenburg – a key incentive to keep graduates in the region.

One focus of the collaboration is on general medicine. Both partners wish to advance further education for family doctors. In the coming years it will be a core challenge to ensure GP care specifically in rural Brandenburg.

Research is another target area for closer cooperation. MUL – CT and MHB are planning joint projects in healthcare and joint funding requests within the network of university medicine. The idea is to quickly transfer latest scientific findings into practice and develop innovative care concepts for Brandenburg.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Uwe Simon, president of the Brandenburg Medical School, points to the pioneering spirit and success story of the MHB ever since its foundation and state recognition in 2014: “Together with the four university hospitals in Neuruppin, Brandenburg an der Havel, Bernau and Rüdersdorf, the first medical school in the State of Brandenburg has built up university medicine in the region and established new standards of science-based and patient-oriented medical training close to practice. This benefits not only our students but also patients in the entire region. We see the cooperation with the MUL – CT as an important move to interlink research, medical training and healthcare in Brandenburg.”

MUL – CT
The Medical University Lausitz – Carl Thiem (MUL – CT) was founded as the first and only state-run medical university in Brandenburg on 1 July 2024. Regional and federal funding for this largest structural change project in the context of the fossil-fuel phase-out amounts to a total of 3.7 billion € up to 2038, the aim being a combination of excellent healthcare, innovative research and state-of-the-art medical training. The focus of interdisciplinary research is on “Health Systems Research” and “Digitization in Healthcare”. The MUL – CT staff currently comprises ca. 4,300 from more than 60 nations. The first cohort of 36 students is scheduled to take up their medical studies with the winter term 2026/2027. Basic subjects will be taught in collaboration with the Brandenburg University of Technology to avoid a duplication of structures. Master courses in nursing science are planned to follow in 2028. Background
Medizinische Hochschule Brandenburg CAMPUS GmbH is the supporting organization of the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane located in Neuruppin. It was founded as a non-profit limited liability company and is responsible for the operation of the university. The MHB was founded in 2014 and currently trains approximately 1,000 students of medicine, dental medicine, psychotherapy and health sciences at several locations within Brandenburg. The right to confer doctoral and post-doctoral degrees was awarded in 2025.
