MHB wins VPH innovation award for project PatientUniversity

Neuruppin, 20 May 2025
Elation at the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB): The association of private universities in Germany selected the project PatientUniversity Brandenburg, a joint initiative of the MHB and the registered association Gesundheit Berlin-Brandenburg, for this year’s innovation award in the category „university development“. The award ceremony was in Berlin on 14 May.
7 out of 32 projects submitted in two categories (“Teaching, Didactics & Student Experience” and “Research, Innovation & University Development”) were nominated for the final round. The PatientUniversity Brandenburg won first prize in the latter category and received € 5,000 to finance future offers and services.
The PatientUniversity Brandenburg started last year and aims to offer easy-to-understand and reliable health information to everybody in the region, independent of age, origin and education, and contribute to informed decision-making in health-related affairs.
Hannah Leichsenring is in charge of the project at the MHB. She says the award is a splendid confirmation of the approach and the dedication of all involved: “It will help with the next step, which is to translate the findings and experiences from the project into teaching and research, in the sense of university development. The participative format is now appreciated as an exemplary and innovative advance in health communication.”
The VPH (Verband der Privaten Hochschulen) honors outstanding projects in research, innovation and university development. The PatientUniversity Brandenburg is part of a nationwide network and offers on-site lectures as well as digital formats. The focus is on personal exchange between patients, relatives, health experts and interested individuals. The initiative was developed together with interested citizens and in close contact with the Brandenburg self-help organization and further partners from the health sector. As early as 2022 the concept had already come out second in a contest for health networkers.
