MHB welcomes 130 first-semester students in Neuruppin for the summer term 2024

Neuruppin, 5 April 2024
Ca. 130 new students started their programs of medicine and psychotherapy at the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) with the summer term 2024 on Friday, 5 April. The location chosen for the festive ceremony was the Kulturkirche in Neuruppin. Prof. Dr. Ulrike Liedtke as president of the regional parliament welcomed the prospective physicians and psychotherapists and praised the contribution of the MHB to healthcare provision in Brandenburg. MHB president Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon pointed to the high degree of practice and patient orientation in MHB programs. Having successfully mastered the multistep admission process as a first hurdle, the beginners could now rely, so Prof. Simon, on the university’s commitment to offer best possible conditions for excellent training and smooth transition into a professional future. On behalf of the university he wished them a good start and much success and joy in their studies.
State parliament president Prof. Dr. Ulrike Liedtke called the MHB a success story for the benefit of Brandenburg’s population: “The total intake for the summer term is 178 – all of them future psychologists, physicians and for the first time also dentists. Brandenburg needs physicians. Every year about 50 graduates start working in regional hospital and surgeries. The MHB is going to celebrate the tenth anniversary this year with currently 949 enrolled students. I was privileged to follow the entire development from nearby, and am highly pleased with every newly graduated physician. Student training at the MHB is an integral part of Brandenburg’s educational landscape, and funding from the Brandenburg government is hard-earned and well deserved. Progress to date has been encouraging, and once again confirms Theodor Fontane who called courage a key element of success.”
The MHB has achieved notable progress not only in medicine but also in psychology and psychotherapy. In September 2022, 32 MHB graduates were the first nationwide to complete their studies with a licensing exam. “The MHB is the first university to have successfully implemented new programs pursuant to revised licensing regulations for psychotherapists,” adds Prof. Johannes Lindenmeyer, who played a key role in this reform and its introduction at the MHB. Lindenmeyer is moreover the driving force behind another innovation at the MHB: the first and nationwide unique online Bachelor course Psychology in Hybrid Format starts with the new term and combines the best elements of two worlds. This is an attractive option for all who prefer to enjoy the benefits of the new Bachelor course Psychology in accordance with new licensing regulations primarily from home, and not on site in Neuruppin. Approximately 30 new students take advantage of this offer with a maximum of flexibility in time and location.
Carla Kniestedt acted as presenter of the afternoon event in Neuruppin. Musical accompaniment was provided by the Berlin Jazz Ensemble with Prof. Johannes Albes, pianist, saxophone and double bass player, songwriter and MHB professor of cardiac surgery. Scheduled for the following day at St. Paulikloster, Brandenburg/Havel: welcoming ceremony for the first 48 students of dental medicine. Having introduced medical studies as the first university in the State of Brandenburg in 2015, the MHB continues its pioneering role in dental medicine.
