MHB students advise senior pupils on mental health

Neuruppin, 24 February 2025
Compared to older generations, children and adolescents feel a stronger impact of the Corona pandemic and its implications, the climate crisis, war in the Ukraine, high inflation rates and other events. In a trend survey among youngsters in Germany (”Jugend in Deutschland 2023“), 46 percent of respondents between 14 and 29 years complain of stress, compared to only 20 percent among people between 50 and 69. Similar results have been found for other mental burdens such as exhaustion, self-doubt and irritability.
Psychology students at the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) in Neuruppin set up a working group called MindMatters last November with the idea to inform and advise senior pupils on various psychiatric patterns and disorders. They want to provide information and open rounds of questions. In addition they present offers of practical support.
The working group already visited the Protestant Grammar School in Neuruppin for a question and answer session where they exchanged views on mental health and psychological disorders with grade 12 pupils. Feedback from pupils was positive, and the school administration plans to continue the student project.
The working group “MindMatters” also invites other schools to inquire about regular projects or events. Daniel Krüger and Nicolas Peine are in charge of the working group and may be contacted via email at mindmatters@mhb-fontane.de.
