New facility
MHB opens first university outpatient unit for dental care

Brandenburg an der Havel, 30 January 2025
An important milestone for the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) and the provision of dental care in the State of Brandenburg: In response to growing demands and gaps in dental care supply, the MHB inaugurated the first university outpatient dental care unit of the State of Brandenburg in Brandenburg an der Havel on 30 January. The facility will strengthen the regional supply infrastructure and at the same time offer practice-based training to prospective dentists. The unit uses the premises at Wilhelmsdorfer Straße 57, where dentist Dr. Jens Friebel provided patient care for 33 years and was unable to find a successor.
The outpatient facility plays an important role in education and research at the MHB and offers up-to-date treatment options under the direction of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schmalz, MHB professor of restorative dentistry and periodontology since October 2024.

MHB chancellor Dr. Gerrit Fleige described the outpatient unit as a core element in the strategic advancement of the Brandenburg Medical School, an important addition to the dental care infrastructure and a further reinforcement of Brandenburg as a healthcare location: “We expect the age-related retirement of about 20 regional dentists over the next decade.
The new MHB dental clinic is scheduled to open on the premises of the former power station in 2026; until then, the outpatient unit will offer MHB dental students the chance of practical experience in patient care at an early stage in their program of dental medicine.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony Lord Mayor Steffen Scheller welcomed the new facility as a promising perspective to close the threatening supply gap.
