MHB increases intake for medical studies to 84 places per semester
Neuruppin, 6 November 2025
The Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB) keeps on track for further growth: Starting with the summer term 2026 the MHB increases its intake for the successful Brandenburg model curriculum in medicine by 15 openings to then 84 beginners per semester.
According to MHB president Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon the extension is a result of careful internal reviews and responds to persistent social needs. Chancellor Dr. Gerrit Fleige points out that the planned expansion will strengthen the university’s economic and strategic basis and set the course for ongoing development in the spirit of the MHB mission statement.
Founded in 2014 by regional and non-profit hospitals and institutions, the MHB was intended as a lasting contribution to ensure and improve healthcare provision in the State of Brandenburg. The concept turned out to be an impressive success. The first graduates of the model curriculum are in specialist training at various cooperating hospitals in the region.
Starting out with 48 medical students per year in 2015, the MHB doubled its intake with 48 per semester in 2020. 2023 saw an increase to 69 per semester, and 84 openings will be available from the summer term 2026. The figures underline the long-term commitment of the MHB to healthcare provision in Brandenburg and specifically in rural areas notably affected by demographic change and a shortage of physicians.
Over 1,100 students in total are currently enrolled at the MHB in programs of medicine, dental medicine, psychology, clinical psychology/psychotherapy and outcomes research; an additional Master course in addiction care is scheduled to start next year. In 2025, the successful accreditation by the Federal Government’s Science Council for the period up to 2031 constituted a further important milestone, in combination with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. The MHB will take another pioneering step next year with the opening of the first dental clinic in Brandenburg an der Havel and thus help to close a looming provision gap in dental care.
The MHB is so far the only university in the State of Brandenburg to supply its clinics and surgeries with trained physicians.
