MHB welcomed 48 new students of medicine and 7 of psychology with a ceremony last Friday. MHB Dean Prof. Dr. Edmund Neugebauer was pleased to celebrate the start of the fourth class in the Brandenburg medical model curriculum, and the third in the Master programme of clinical psychology and psychotherapy: “The new students have asserted themselves against numerous competitors in comprehensive application procedures.” The total number of students enrolled at MHB in the summer term of 2018 has grown to 321, 187 in medicine and 134 in psychology.
Dr. Ulrike Gutheil, Secretary of State at the Potsdam Ministry of Science, pointed out that MHB students enjoy excellent conditions; admission procedures, so Gutheil, focus less on school-leaving grades but on personality, individual talents and motivation, responsibility and empathy: “This is what patients hope for: physicians and psychologists who see their job as a calling.” The Brandenburg medical model curriculum, she continued, already implements many elements envisaged in the Masterplan 2020 for medical studies which federal and state ministries of health and science passed a year ago to revise medical education and licensing regulations for doctors in Germany, such as: learning in small groups; interdisciplinary, problem-oriented and science-based instruction; a stronger focus on general medicine and on the conveyance of interactive skills; more practice and patient orientation. Dr. Gutheil invited the new students to make the best use of their opportunities and in addition enjoy Brandenburg’s regional and cultural highlights.

Ralf Reinhard, district administrator of Ostprignitz-Ruppin and chairman of the MHB board, underlined the courage demonstrated by clinics, physicians and politicians in founding the MHB, and their capacities of jointly tackling the challenges involved. He spoke of a range of options to further improve exchange between the university and the region. Carla Kniestedt, presenter of the event as in the years before, addressed the vision of an “affordable municipal student dormitory”. Neuruppin’s Mayor Jens-Peter Golde saw no current need for a dormitory, in view of “sufficient student accommodation offered by local authorities and private individuals”. He expressed himself highly pleased with the refreshing impact of students on life in Neuruppin.
MHB Dean Neugebauer focused on “The patient as partner?!” in his keynote speech and underlined the significance of patients in future health care: “Health professionals in medicine and clinical psychology increasingly perceive patients not as passive recipients of care or laypersons but rather as core actors and proactive co-producers of health. Medical education must therefore take innovative steps to improve the provision of health care, specifically in rural regions. Our future health system will be evidence based and quality controlled, patient centred and patient oriented.”
The Berlin Jazz Ensemble with Johannes Albes (professor of cardiac surgery) on the tenor sax provided musical entertainment at the official reception, which was followed by a buffet and a party with DJ Dr. M.
The next class in the MHB Bachelor programme of psychology will start on 10 October 2018. Deadline for applications is 31 August 2018. The medical programme always begins with the summer term. Deadline for applications for the next class of the Brandenburg medical model curriculum is 2 October 2018; online applications as well as written applications are accepted from 1 August 2018.
