Hand-over of new ultrasound equipment for Ultrasound SkillsLab

Neuruppin, 10 January 2025
A further milestone in modern medical education at the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB): Four new ultrasound devices were handed over to the student-operated ultrasound SkillsLab and the Brandenburg Institute of Clinical Ultrasound (Brandenburgisches Institut für Klinischen Ultraschall (BIKUS) on 14 December 2024. This opens up new possibilities in practical training to MHB medical students who can come into contact with ultrasound diagnostics at an early stage, increase their knowledge of anatomy and physiology and prepare optimally for clinical routines. Prof. Dr. Dieter Nürnberg, director of BIKUS and MHB senior professor, welcomes this important step towards a future cooperation with Mindray.
Mindray as one of the world’s leading suppliers in the area of ultrasound technology is a supporter of the VEXUS Study. This study, conducted at MHB university hospitals in Bernau, Neuruppin and Brandenburg/Havel and a further hospital in Strausberg, explores less strenuous forms of treatment for patients with cardiac insufficiency. Heart failure is a frequent problem particularly in elderly people in Brandenburg, leading to complaints such as shortness of breath and water retention in the body. Brandenburg’s rate of hospitalization for heart failure is one of the highest nationwide, due to the high percentage of elderly and aging people. Researchers and physicians are looking into an innovative and gentle mode of treatment based on ultrasound to measure the quantity of liquid in the body, to minimize the risks of over or under supply and thus to protect renal function. The method helps to fine-tune the therapy and reduces the risk of complications.

Mindray has now raised ultrasound-related training at the MHB Sono SkillsLab to a new level with a preferential offer for the new equipment. Student tutors were full of enthusiasm when they demonstrated to MHB president Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon and SkillsLab director Nora Schiller which benefits for medical education the new devices provide. Prof. Simon pointed to the executive board’s share in realizing this cooperation, appreciation of the long-term commitment shown by the BIKUS and the student tutors involved, and the firm intention to further advance this flagship project.
