First University Dental Hospital in Brandenburg: Additional treatment capacities and modern dental care

The MHB is going to open the new university dental hospital, the very first in the State of Brandenburg, in the listed building of a former power plant in Brandenburg an der Havel on 3 August, bringing together patient care, instruction and research under one roof.
Five fully digital treatment units await the start of patient treatment at the beginning of August, and their number is scheduled to increase to about 40. The new facility offers considerable additional capacities and appointment options, including specialized consultations. Prof. Dr. med. dent. Dr. rer. med. Gerhard Schmalz is the managing director of the clinic and holds a professorship of conservative dentistry and periodontology.
New use of historical building
The thoroughly refurbished building combines historical elements like old masonry and steel constructions with up-to-date medical technology and creates a special environment for the training of dental students. MHB chancellor Dr. Gerrit Fleige calls the new university hospital a tremendous asset for the MHB as well as the town of Brandenburg an der Havel as a healthcare location, and an investment into better care structures and the training of urgently needed dental professionals.
Wide range of treatments
The new hospital comprises two areas of dental medicine in two polyclinics: one for conservative dentistry and periodontology, and one for dental prosthetics and geriatric dentistry. The treatment spectrum includes general dentistry, periodontology, endodontics and dentistry for the elderly.
Prof. Dr. med. dent. Julia Jockusch directs the last-mentioned polyclinic and holds a professorship of dental prosthetics and geriatric dentistry. She underlines the general objective: dental care of the highest quality for all patients – individual, evidence based and geared to human needs: “Our focus is on elderly patients and their special need for the long-term provision of reliable dental care close to their home.”
In addition, there will be special consultation hours for patients with dentophobia and diseases of the oral mucosa, and services related to dental sleep medicine and mobile care provision.
Prof. Schmalz points to oral health as an essential component of general health and quality of life: “This is why we offer long-term guidance and dental care in the university context with close connections to research and teaching.” Two further polyclinics – for orthodontics and oral surgery - are scheduled to open by the end of this year.
Close connection between dentistry studies and patient care
The new university hospital forms the center of the Brandenburg Model Curriculum in Dental Medicine which the MHB introduced as the first of its kind in this federal state in 2024, with 48 openings per year. It is an essential part of the program that starting with the seventh semester students assume responsibility for their own patients under expert supervision. The close connection between studies and patient care facilitates a strong practice orientation based on latest scientific findings, and patients profit from state-of-the-art treatment.
Secured provision of dental care
The new MHB dental clinic helps to ensure the long-term provision of dental care in Brandenburg. Many dentists in the region are expected to retire over the next few years, and rural areas are already suffering from supply gaps.
The new clinic creates additional capacities, strengthens research and teaching and serves to train qualified young dentists for the region. In this way the MHB makes an important contribution to future dental care in Brandenburg.

Why is the new dental hospital important?
The MHB university dental hospital is the first university institution of dental medicine in Brandenburg. It expands outpatient dentistry treatment and educates prospective dentists.
The hospital is part of the Brandenburg Model Curriculum in Dental Medicine established at the MHB in 2024. The long-term objective is a contribution to covering the demand for dentists, specifically in Brandenburg.

Investments
Investments of almost 5 million Euro are scheduled to cover infrastructural equipment up to 2027. The focus will be on the equipment of treatment units, simulation technology, medical instruments as well as IT hardware and software.

The network of cooperating partners is being steadily expanded for the benefit of student education, research and clinical development.

The building
The new university hospital is located in the former power plant of the town of Brandenburg an der Havel.

Following the completion of the university hospital, the building contractor plans to renovate the neighboring boiler house and redesign the outside area.

Finances and construction costs
Building contractor Florian Grotmann predominantly finances the redevelopment of the former power plant in line with heritage requirements. The MHB has entered into a long-term rental agreement and in addition invests in infrastructural extras such as
· transponder technology for lock systems,
· light fixtures for treatment rooms and atrium and
· technical equipment for temperature control in server rooms and the anatomy unit.
In addition to a credit line agreement, an annuity loan amounting to 5 million Euro was agreed with Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse Potsdam in June 2026.
