Donation of € 12,000 for innovative MHB SkillsLab

The civic foundation Bürgerstiftung Brandenburg supports the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) with a generous donation of € 12,000. The sum will be used to purchase a simulated patient monitor for the SkillsLab where prospective physicians receive hands-on training in preparation for their future professional practice.

The simulated patient monitor serves to create realistic training scenarios and is a good example of how the SkillsLab works. Nora Schiller, in charge of the SkillsLab, is highly pleased with the generous donation. “The MHB SkillsLab is a key location for training close to practice. The objective is to school students in clinical skills right from the start and for the entire duration of their studies.

This is a risk-free environment where students are permitted to learn from mistakes. The simulated patient monitor is going to play a significant role in modern medical education and will underline the position of the SkillsLab as an important training place in the region.”

Student tutor Emil Uhlich has details: “The new patient monitor has two components: the monitor for students, and a control unit. The monitor displays various vital parameters like blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, saturation curve and pulse wave. Depending on the progress of the scenario and on students’ intervention we can change the vital parameters within the scenario and respond accordingly for a realistic representation of events. In this way we can respond to all contingencies and emergency situations and offer students realistic demonstrations.”

Frank Robby Wallis from the board of the Bürgerstiftung Brandenburg says the donation is in explicit support of the education of physicians and an investment in the future of the region: “The simulated patient monitor is a vivid symbol of up-to-date medical education in the region, for the benefit of Brandenburg’s population.”
