Case of the Year award

Heart specialists from Immanuel Klinikum Bernau Herzzentrum Brandenburg, an MHB university clinic, receive “Case of the Year” award
Last summer, Prof. Dr. Christian Butter (MHB Professor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology and chief physician of the cardiology department), together with Frank Hölschermann (senior physician, same department) and Dr. Ralf-Uwe Kühnel (senior physician, department of cardiovascular surgery) performed surgery on a patient who was in extremely poor health and considered inoperable. The team “fractured” the patient’s mechanical valve and subsequently performed a transcatheter valve-in-valve implantation (TAVI) – a worldwide unique and successful intervention, followed by the patient’s early discharge from the hospital.
The European Heart Journal published the case at that time and now selected it for the Case of the Year award in the section “Interventional Cardiology”.
Prof. Dr. Christian Butter feels greatly honoured to receive the award in the highly innovative and worldwide competitive field of interventions: “I am pleased that the strategy chosen by our heart team after careful and differentiated consideration proved to be successful and can be offered to selected patients as an additional therapy option.”
