Brandenburg Medical School opens virtual exhibition

Neuruppin, 28 March 2025
From October 2024 to January 2025, a highly successful exhibition commemorated the tenth anniversary of the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB). It can now be visited in a virtual format in response to requests from many who were unable to see it on site. On International Women’s Day, another important section was added presenting “Female medical doctors in Brandenburg”. Findings from a student project form part of the virtual show and are available at: www.mhb-fontane.de/de/frauen-in-der-medizin.
“This new section of the exhibition highlights the achievement of women at the MHB on the one hand, and on the other points to the challenges we still face in this context”, says Georgia Fehler, Equal Opportunity Commissioner at the MHB. Visitors are cordially invited to discover the histories of those remarkable women and be inspired by their lives and visions. The first part presents personalities like MHB Vice President Prof. Dr. Irene Hinterseher and Prof. Dr. Stefanie Oess, professor of biochemistry and director of the MHB Center for Curricular Development and Education/Continuing Education Research. Another section is dedicated to Anna Marie Kuhnow (1859 to 1923); growing up in Frankfurt (Oder), she had to go to Switzerland to realize her dream of medical studies, since at the end of the 19th century young women in Germany were still denied access to secondary education.
Medical students contributed to the new section with research projects from a seminar on “fundamentals of medical mindset and action” in the winter term 2024/25: Konstantin Siegler, Marlene Daniels, Emily Jeschke, Florian Götsche, Romy Müller, Marianne Hildebrandt, Lara Wolf, Constantin Kurth, Catarina Kuhnert, Mariia Dannehl and Eva Ziegenhagen. Medical historian Prof. Dr. Andreas Jüttemann initiated the 10-year exhibition with the support of students of medicine and psychology who explored the lives and careers of various historical and current personalities from the Brandenburg health system. The plan is to add reports about further female exponents to the exhibition, based on material from, e.g. scientific internships. Suggestions as to whom to consider will be welcome.
