The Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) welcomed about 70 new students of medicine and psychology with a ceremony at the event venue Kulturkirche Neuruppin last Friday from 3:00 p.m. Applicants had to pass a multistep admission procedure in order to start their chosen course of studies at the MHB.

MHB president Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon congratulated the newcomers on the successful completion of admission procedures as the first step on the way to become a physician or psychotherapist. He promised the university’s full support for their academic progress and personal growth alike.

Prof. Dr. Ulrike Liedtke, president of the Brandenburg parliament, underlined the significance of empathy for future physicians and psychologists, particularly in view of the current international situation, “with a terrible war next door, with a whole range of uncertainties and fears to cope with”. She concluded her words of greeting with an appeal to show solidarity and jointly tackle the challenges ahead, but without neglecting their studies: “You will be in great demand as highly qualified physicians and psychologists. That should be enough motivation to address your studies with zeal and earnest commitment.”

Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher congratulated the new students on their choice of the MHB whose development she called a story of remarkable success. She thanked all involved in this process for their continuous and courageous efforts.

Prof. Markus Deckert as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology and Prof. Johannes Lindenmeyer (Professor of Clinical Psychology) gave short introductions, followed by Franziska Weiß and Sebastian Weiss with words of welcome for their new fellow students. The ceremony was musically accompanied by the Berlin Jazz Ensemble with Johannes Albes – saxophone and double bass player, songwriter and MHB professor of cardiac surgery – and presented once again by Carla Kniestedt.
