A science slam was part of the concluding events of this year’s German Conference on Health Services Research (DKVF) in Berlin from 4 to 6 October. MHB medical student Bertram Otto was the winner among a total of 14 candidates with his presentation of an innovative didactic learning format to convey competences in community medicine. 

Science Slams are an entertaining format to present scientific research methods and findings. Each of the 14 participants in Berlin had only three minutes to introduce their respective projects. These were Bachelor and Master theses from the field of health services research. Bertram Otto was awarded with the loudest applause from the audience, i.e. more than 105 dB, for his presentation of an innovative didactic learning format to convey competences in community medicine which he entitled “I just want to play!”. Otto, who started his medical studies in the summer term of 2015, said he was surprised to come out on top in view of the strong competition. The award includes prize money, an invitation to next year’s conference and also the textbook “Versorgungsforschung”. 

In collaboration with fellow students Otto started the project Gesundes Land Brandenburg which addresses health care in the federal state of Brandenburg. The idea behind the format is to familiarize students with the regional peculiarities of health provision in Brandenburg. Otto points out that the topic initially does not attract much attention among students but finds much approval with more than 70 % of participants to date.
